Phoenix Theatre School in association with Rhodes Arts Complex are looking for primary aged children to join us for the challenge of creating a fun new piece of theatre in just one day! We’ll kick off at 10am and then family and friends will be asked to join us at 7pm to see the play we have created. Nick Sharrat’s Big Draw Along - Thursday 31st May, 2.00pm
Join acclaimed children’s writer and illustrator Nick Sharratt to find out how he creates his picture books. He’ll show you how to draw Tracy Beaker and Timothy Pope, kings and cats and all kinds of crazy creatures. Plus he’ll share some of his very best drawing tips. Bring pencils, paper and something to lean on and expect plenty of chances to join in!

When Gnomeo and Juliet return home to find that everyone in their garden is missing, there's only one gnome to call...Sherlock Gnomes. The famous detective and sworn protector of London's garden gnomes arrives with his sidekick Watson to investigate the case.

A high-flying bachelor goose named Peng is injured in flight and finds himself saddled with two adorably hilarious and demanding ducklings, on a long journey south that will turn this scrappy threesome into a family.

As our contribution to the UK-wide “Museums at Night” events we will be hosting our very own night time trail. Find your way around our galleries by torchlight and discover the clues in the museum. Can you answer all of the questions to win a sweet treat at the end? Ideal for children 3+, must be accompanied by an adult.

Roman Writing Workshop

Drop-in today and explore the world of Roman writing. You will be able to see a selection of replica writing artefacts from the Museum’s education collection, try writing on a wax tablet in Roman cursive script, choose yourself a Roman name and write it out using a reed pen and ink – great for school show and tell.

Soapbox Race!

Sunday, 27 May

Great Dunmow Round Table community charity soapbox race up to 60 teams including schools, colleges, local businesses and daring individuals will battle it out to be named champion of the first ever Great Dunmow Soapbox Race.

You will expect to see jumps, near misses and possibly some spectacular crashes all in name of a great charity, Great Dunmow Round Table. All profits raised will be used to support the local community and to those who need it most.

The event will be a free, community event featuring professional comedian commentators, multiple food outlets, a bar and a selection of stalls and entertainment for children. The race will be taking place at Braintree Road, Great Dunmow (CM6 1HT) and doors open at 10am with races starting 11am.
