Legends of Land and Sea: A Concert for families
As part of the Words in Walden Festival, Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra presents a concert for families entitled ”Legends of Land and Sea”. The concert takes place on Sunday 30th September 2018 at 3pm in the Saffron Hall, Audley End Road, Saffron Walden CB11 4UH. Knights, giants, minstrels and mermaids, oceans and rivers, castles and caves are the inspiration for music from Mendelssohn, Rimsky-Korsakov, Smetana, Bax and others. James Mayhew, illustrator and narrator, tells the stories, and then he and Antonio Reche-Martinez will paint, capturing the mystery of the legends while the orchestra plays. At the end of the concert the paintings will be raffled raising funds for charity.

A Centenary Performance of the Planet Suite by Gustav Holst at Thaxted Parish Church
Gustav Holst wrote the Planet Suite while he was the Church Organist in Thaxted Parish Church. It is a hundred years since the work was first performed. To celebrate the centenary of Holst’s important work, the Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra is performing the Planet Suite on Saturday 13th October at 7:30 in Thaxted Parish Church, 24 Watling St, Thaxted CM6 2PJ. The concert also includes The Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams and an Overture to a Comedy by Henry Balfour Gardiner.
