The New Year of the Dog, a great time to share with our best friends

As we head towards celebrating the Chinese Year of the Dog it seems a good time to focus on great places to take our favourite four-legged friends.  The health and social benefits of walking regularly with our dogs are numerous for both owner and pet. Improved heart health, reducing stress and helping to maintain a healthy weight to name but a few.  Meeting the needs of our beloved dogs provides good motivation, whatever the weather, for us to get out and about in our local community, to meet and greet like minded people and enjoy the many benefits the changing seasons have to offer. Quality time with our pets is good for us all, and ensures that pent up energy or anxiety they may have, are exercised out, enabling calmer behaviour at home. The same could be said for our children!

This area of the country has many wonderful places to discover. On the outskirts of Cambridge, Wandlebury Country Park, with its green flag award, is one of them. It is easy to access, welcomes dogs on leads and supports dog owners with dedicated dog refuse bins. There is easy onsite parking and toilet facilities, numerous woodland paths to explore -  some buggy and wheelchair friendly - for leisurely strolls. Wandlebury is a fantastic resource for the whole family with a changing kaleidoscope of colours and natural experiences all year round for everyone. Kids can take their new Christmas bikes and scooters to try out on the safe, dog mess free, woodland paths, kick a ball about in the games field or simply enjoy releasing their excess holiday energy. They can put their imagination to use constructing dens in the dedicated building area.

For those who fancy trying out something new in 2018 Wandlebury has many activities available such as orienteering, regular walking groups or fun bushcraft events, for all ages. Discounts and free parking are just some of the benefits available to members for the small annual fee.

So dust off that Christmas glitter and mince pies crumbs, and get out and breathe the fresh, beautiful air of the local countryside. Why not blow those winter cobwebs away today and enjoy one of Cambridgeshire’s greatest natural treasures right on your doorstep!
