A cold damp home is bad for everyone’s health

A cold home is very often linked either to money worries, (you are struggling to pay fuel bills / maintain the boiler/ repair windows/ empty gutters), or difficulty keeping on top of household repairs (you are scared of being scammed, you can’t find someone you can trust to do the work, you don't know what you need to do to make your home warmer).

Living in a cold home is bad for everyone’s health, but older people, very young children and those with long term health problems are particularly vulnerable; cold and damp conditions can make certain health conditions, such as respiratory problems, much worse.

If you, a friend or a neighbour are struggling with fuel bills, an old boiler, draughts or mould, help is available.  Uttlesford is one of only nine areas in the country which is trialling a single point of access for people to get practical support or advice to help them cope better during the winter.

For help with:

  • • Benefits advice, including cold weather payments
  • • Money and debt advice, including debts to utility providers,
  • • Advice on switching, getting lower fuel bills, accessing the priority services register
  • • Advice on home improvement grants and handyman services
  • • Energy efficient behaviours and home improvements
  • • Home safety and fall prevention
  • • Community services, including transport, food delivery and home library services
