What’s the crack?

You may have heard one of your friend’s say, after a visit to the chiropractor, that after his back was ‘cracked’ he felt much better. So what is chiropractic all about?

The chiropractic profession has been established for over 100 years and is now the third biggest healthcare profession after medicine and dentistry. Chiropractors are specialists in assessing and restoring joint function. They work with all the joints of the body and pay particular attention to the joints of the spine.

When joints don’t function properly it can result in stiffness and pain. Poor functioning joints can result in back and neck pain, headaches, sciatica, shoulder, elbow and wrist pain, hip, knee, ankle and foot pain. Chiropractors use their hands to restore function to the joints which often helps relieve these symptoms.

Chiropractic treatment- What do they do?

Chiropractors use techniques such as massage, stretching, manipulation, mobilisation and acupuncture to help restore joint function. It is during the manipulation, when the joint is stretched, that a small bubble of gas is released within the joint making a ‘crack’ or ‘pop’ noise.

Getting to the bare bones of it!

The chiropractic approach is to address the cause of the problem, as well as the area of symptoms, this can help prevent a recurrence of the condition. The chiropractor will ask questions and advise you about your working environment and your sleeping and sitting postures. They will also recommend exercises to address any underlying muscle imbalances.

Chiropractic and sport

Chiropractors help sports men and women with injuries such as groin strains, sprained ankles, tennis elbow, Achilles tendonitis, shoulder tendonitis and muscle strains. Often these injuries can be the result of dysfunction of neighbouring joints and the chiropractor will identify these and restore function to help prevent recurrence of the injury. Some sports people choose to have chiropractic care to help improve overall performance. For example if a golfer has good function of the joints of the spine it may help improve his swing.
